Never Lie on a Lion – Alan James Brown & Barbara Vagnozzi | English-language picture book

Never Lie on a Lion is a cheerful, funny and colourful English picture book by Alan James Brown, with playful illustrations by Barbara Vagnozzi. The book is full of rhyme, animals and hilarious situations that invite children to actively participate. 🐘🐑🦁

The title immediately gives away the main message: you had better not get into mischief with animals! Because what happens if you lie down on a lion? Or try to sneak up behind a sheep?

In this humorous cautionary tale, the crazy consequences follow one after another. Children are chased by horses, end up covered in mud and have to pay close attention when they come near certain animals. 😄

The combination of rhyming text and funny illustrations makes the story particularly suitable for reading aloud together. Children can predict what will happen, imitate animal sounds and, in the meantime, get acquainted with simple English words and phrases.

🦁 What does it stimulate/practice in your child?

Language development – listening to a rhythmic and rhyming story

English language – getting acquainted with English words and phrases through play

Listening skills – listening attentively to rhyme and repetition

Humour and imagination – enjoying the crazy situations and unexpected consequences

Observation – discovering what is happening in the colourful illustrations

Interaction – imitating animal sounds, predicting what will happen and laughing together

📖 How do you use it?

Read the story together and let your child actively participate. For example, ask what they think will happen if someone gets too close to a certain animal.

The rhyming text is also excellent for repeating certain phrases together. Make it even more fun by imitating the different animal sounds or acting out the animals' movements. 🐄🐎🐑

Because the book is entirely in English, it is also a fun way to introduce young children to English through play. 🇬🇧❤️
